HOLMGANG

HOLMGANG was the first production created by Giant Wolf. A tale of two brothers, their lives, and how they came to staring off against each other in a duel to the death. Set in the Viking Age, it explored family, honour, duty, and how societal expectations can chain us to our destiny, good or ill.

We performed Holmgang in the Sean O’Casey theatre, as well as at the 2017 InterTWINed Youth Theatre Festival in Cottbus, Germany.

I was definitely thrilled! It was like Game of Thrones meets Macbeth except… It was not television, it was theatre! And theatre at its best, I might add! What I especially loved is the choice of using barely no props, building every scene and atmosphere with the actors’ bodies and movements (the battle, the ceremony…), combined with a great care for costumes. And, of course, the script and the acting were so powerful and intriguing they were… real! I don’t know how to say it otherwise. Let’s say it was the perfect mix of movie realism (acting and costumes) and evocative theatre atmosphere (pantomimes and great lights).

“An evening of perfect storytelling, tempo, choreographies and energy find it’s conclusion in an inevitable ending for both – the play and it’s story. Holmgang left me speechless and got a well-deserved, long lasting standing ovation from its multinational audience in Cottbus, Germany. The synergy of the young actors, their love for a story they dove in so deeply is truly a joy to see, not only for fans of Ireland’s rough history, but also for everyone who's addicted to theater. Giant Wolf Youth Theatre created a masterpiece here, a play of quality you very rarely see in a non professional theater group. A must watch!”

EGGPLANT

EGGPLANT was created in 2019 with our youth theatre members, after our workshops landed on the topic of sex education in Ireland. A series of vignettes written by our members about the topic became an electric show with beautiful movement pieces.

We performed Eggplant in the Civic Theatre, as well as in the 2019 InterTWINed Youth Theatre Festival in Cottbus, Germany.

A fine line walked well with tact and humour between embarrassing and been-there-done-that while treading into neither. An earnest look into the bizarre teenage life of today where it seems like you have to grow up in a fortnight. This show manages to reassure the viewer that it's ok to grow up tomorrow or after and to talk.

Külli Täht, director at Eksperiment, Viimsi

The young drama group not only showed an astonishing piece of acting but as well a great glimpse of Ireland's society of today. Short and independent slice-of-life stories have been arranged to a comprehensive portrayal of young people’s everyday life concerning all the big questions like, love, acceptance, sexuality, belief, poverty… the list goes on. With humour, passion and great talent the young actors and actresses managed to deliver a strong message of crucial importance not only for the future of Ireland or Europe: We, the adults, must listen to this upcoming generation, we must respect the young people and we must not only place our hopes in their hands, we must also include them in the decisions of today. They deserved to be heard and “Eggplant” as well as the Giant Wolf Theatre with all of its members is another shining example that reminds us of this fact.
